Student Caught Fire While Conducting Science Experiment At School Open HouseDouglasville, GA - A senior at a Georgia high school is being treated for burns to 25 percent of her body after a science experiment went wrong during her school’s open house, and she was caught on fire.

On Thursday, Chapel Hill High School was hosting an Advanced Placement Open House where groups of students conduct presentations throughout the building. One group was showing how you can identify chemicals by the color of their flame when burning.

Surveillance video captured the moment a flammable liquid came out of its container too quicklyand ignited. The resulting fireball set a 12th grade female student on fire, and people nearby learned how to identify a human by the color of their flame when burning. (Hint: Bright yellow and screaming).

One of the student’s teachers who’d been monitoring the experiment took her down to the ground in an effort to extinguish the flames, but was having some trouble. Another teacher handed 17-year-old Will Wheeler a fire blanket that he was able to use to finally put out the fire.

The girl was transported to the hospital with burns on about 25 percent of her upper body. Luckily, she’s expected to make a full recovery. The school district has refused to make any further comments aside from explaining what happened, and said that in between making emergency phone calls to their lawyers, will provide updates when they are made available.
