PORT CHARLOTTE, FL – Police have charged 23-year-old Kayla Oxenham with child abuse after they say she branded her two young children so that she could identify them.
According to the police report, Oxenham’s two daughters – ages 5 and 7 – said their mother told them she “forgot how much she loved fire,” before using a lighter to burn a stick. She then used the hot stick to “brand” their arms.
Afterwards, Oxenham told them she did this so that they could have ice cream, and so she could identify them as her children. (o_O) A medical exam would later show at least one of the children had injuries indicative of being burned.
The 7-year-old also told investigators that Oxenham got mad at her little sister for locking a cat in the bathroom so she slammed the girl’s head into a wall several times before kicking her in the side.
Oxenham was interviewed but denied attacking her youngest daughter. She refused to discuss allegations of burning the siblings.
Kayla Oxenham was arrested and charged with felony child abuse and is currently out of jail on $15,000 bond. Her daughters were placed in the custody of the youngest girl’s father.
