MEMPHIS, TN – A popular musician is dead after he livestreamed himself pouring kerosene all over his body before setting himself on fire in front of his ex-girlfriend.
The incident happened Saturday morning outside Murphy’s Bar where 33-year-old Jared McLemore began a Facebook Live video that starts with him sitting in a parking lot.
McLemore lifts a red jerry can and completely douses himself with kerosene before a man, realizing what McLemore was about to do, tries to kick a lighter out of McLemore’s hand. He fails, and McLemore is able to ignite himself.
You then see McLemore jump up and run screaming off camera. According to witnesses, McLemore ran towards the bar where his ex-girlfriend, Alyssa Moore, was working as a sound engineer.
According to reports, McLemore had waited until the band playing in the bar had finished their set, knowing Moore would walk away from the soundboard she was operating.
McLemore approached Moore and mumbled a “goodbye” before grabbing her arm and wiping it on his chest to show he was covered in kerosene. He then crossed the street where he then set himself on fire.
Once lit, McLemore ran towards the bar where Moore managed to hold the door shut until the heat became too much for her to stand. McLemore then made it inside the bar where he repeatedly yelled “you made me do this” at Moore. Some patrons thought it was some kind of stunt.
“It looked like a movie, like someone wearing a flame-retardant suit,” said a member of the band playing in the bar.
When people realized it was not a joke, they began throwing towels and beer over McLemore’s burning body in an attempt to put out the flames. McLemore was rushed to the hospital where he would be pronounced dead later that night.
This was reportedly the first day Moore had returned to work after breaking up with McLemore, who has a history of abusing Moore. He was arrested in August 2016 for strangling Moore and in April of this year, he was sentenced to probation for domestic violence charges and ordered to undergo mental evaluations.
Witnesses said Moore had a restraining order against McLemore, but he repeatedly violated it. Guess she doesn’t have to worry about that anymore, yeah?
Edit: Looks like some people were aware the guys was off his rocker. A few days before he torched himself, he sent the following picture to Moore:
I have included the Facebook Live video that you can watch after the following, sanitized news video I have included because it has some eyewitness accounts.
Warning, the following is kinda sorta graphic:
