PEMBERTON, NJ – According to police, 22-year-old Hyphernkemberly Dorvilier killed her baby by dousing her with a flammable liquid and setting her on fire in the middle of the road.
Dave Joseph said he witnessed the incident, which occurred around 11 p.m. Friday night, when Dorvilier got out of her car and lit something on fire in the middle of the road. Joseph said Dorvilier told him she was burning dog waste.
Joseph said she as she was putting the fire out with a water bottle, his wife realized the “dog waste” was actually a baby and she began to scream. Dorvilier attempted to flee the scene, but Joseph stopped her from escaping.
“She was trying to defy what it was. I had her on the ground. I was holding her down because she tried to get away,” he said.
The baby was still alive and breathing when fire and rescue teams arrived on the scene. She was airlifted to St. Christopher’s Hospital but would die two hours later. It was later revealed that the infant had been doused with an accelerant prior to being set ablaze.
Dorvilier was taken into custody at the scene and has been charged with one count of murder. She is currently being held in Burlington County Corrections and Work Release Center in Pemberton Township. on $500,000 bail. Superior Court Judge Jeanne T. Covert set her bail at $500,000.
“It was just mind-boggling. It was a nightmare even if you have a strong heart,” said Joseph. “Hopefully she’ll pay for it.”
